Step 1: A Warm Welcome and Thorough Examination
From the moment you step into our Prairie Village office, our friendly team will greet you and make you feel at ease. We’ll begin by reviewing your medical and dental history and discussing any concerns you may have. Dr. Clark will then conduct a comprehensive oral examination to evaluate the health of your teeth and gums. This may include:
- Visual Inspection: Dr. Clark will carefully examine your teeth, gums, and surrounding tissues for any signs of decay, inflammation, or abnormalities.
- Periodontal Evaluation: We’ll assess the health of your gums by measuring the depth of the pockets around your teeth. This helps us detect and address any signs of gum disease.
- Dental X-Rays: If needed, we’ll take digital X-rays to get a clearer picture of your teeth’ roots, jawbone, and any areas not visible during the visual exam.
Step 2: Professional Cleaning with a Gentle Touch
Once the examination is complete, our skilled dental hygienist will begin the cleaning process. This typically includes:
- Removal of Plaque and Tartar: Using specialized dental instruments, the hygienist will carefully remove plaque and tartar buildup from your teeth, paying close attention to the gumline and hard-to-reach areas.
- Teeth Polishing: A gentle polishing paste will be used to remove surface stains and leave your teeth feeling smooth and shiny. They may also recommend a fluoride treatment to help protect your teeth from decay.
- Flossing: We’ll floss between your teeth to remove any remaining plaque or food particles.
Step 3: Personalized Oral Hygiene Guidance
We believe that patient education is key to achieving optimal oral health. After your cleaning, our hygienist will provide personalized guidance on improving your at-home oral care routine. This may include:
- Brushing Techniques: We’ll demonstrate proper brushing techniques to help you effectively remove plaque without damaging your gums.
- Flossing Tips: We’ll show you the best way to floss to reach all areas of your mouth.
- Recommendations for Oral Care Products: We can suggest specific toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwashes, and other products that meet your individual needs.
Step 4: Addressing Your Concerns and Scheduling Your Next Visit
Dr. Clark will review the findings from your examination and cleaning, discuss any concerns, and answer your questions. We’ll also schedule your next cleaning appointment, typically recommended every six months.

Post-Dental Cleaning Care
After a dental cleaning, you may feel a bit of sensitivity, especially if it was a deep cleaning. We recommend doing the following after your appointment:
- Regular brushing and flossing should be continued.
- It’s recommended to avoid foods or beverages that are extremely hot, cold, sweet, or acidic if there’s sensitivity.
- Rinse with a saltwater solution or anti-sensitivity mouthwash to alleviate discomfort.
- Schedule regular dental check-ups and cleanings as advised by our dentist, typically every six months.
